The reason for his company’s success is very clear to Gordon Burns, the co-founder and technical director of ETS Laboratories, which has five locations in California, Oregon, and Washington.

2020 Best Laboratory/Testing Services: ETS Labs

“None of what we do would be possible without the dedication of our ETS family of employees,” says Burns. He and wife, Marjorie, a TTB-certified chemist, started ETS in 1978 in the basement of their home in St. Helena, Calif. “Many of our staff have been with us for decades, including at least one who’s been with us for more than 30 years.”

That longevity and consistency is something that the company’s clients have long appreciated. ETS works with leading wine, spirits, and beer producers, and also serves as a third-party provider for export analysis, with ISO 17025 accreditation and TTB certification.

“We’re proud that the world’s finest winemakers trust us to provide the tools that support their winemaking decisions,” says Burns.

In this, Burns says, the company prides itself on being independently owned and operated, providing objective third-party reports that are free from conflicts of interest.

ETS offers a variety of analytical services, with more than 250 analytical tools and a full suite of advanced technologies—many of which were developed by ETS. These include testing for bottling and quality control, harvest decisions, and fermentation monitoring for wineries, nutrition panels for beer, and alcohol panels for spirits.
