Fighting Chance Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County ($SRP 26) is now available nationwide. Winemaker Adam Poirier sourced fruit from notable Santa Barbara vineyards, including North Canyon, Fiddlestix and Cat Canyon and bottled in screwcap to retain freshness.
The Fighting Chance label was inspired by a mezzotint created by artist M.C. Escher that is now part of the extensive Escher collection in the National Gallery of Arts in Washington DC. Escher used a concave shaving mirror to magnify his own eye, and placed a skull in the iris. The Fighting Chance label expression features a bull in the label, with a knowing observation about Pinot Noir offering an explanation and interpretation:
Pinot Noir grapes are thin-skinned. They bruise. They blister in the Sun. They have well and truly earned the sobriquet “Heartbreak Grape.” There are, no question, easier grapes to grow. Here in the rugged hills of the Central Coast, where morning fog and afternoon breezes make farming tougher than tough, we like a challenge. If there’s a fighting chance for Pinot Noir, well, we’ll show up for the fight.
