Spirited columnist Wayne Curtis has updated and rereleased his popular And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in 10 Cocktails. The book first came out 12 years ago this summer, and, says Curtis, “It was gratifying when, every year or two, my editor would call, sounding confused, and say, ‘I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but your book is still selling.’

“Rum’s long history hasn’t changed much since my earlier research. A few bits of new business have come up, but the number of distillers of craft rums in the United States has grown exponentially since 2006—from two to more than 200,” he continues. “So the last chapter on modern rum, especially, needed an overhaul, as did the list of suggested rums and the cocktail recipes in the back. Think: Less Zacapa, more Lost Spirits and Privateer.”
